Banchiu Branch Station, Dec. 22, 2020 Anoplophora macularia Control Demonstration and Water-conservation Technique Promotion Event

2021-02-09

To reduce damage caused by Anoplophora macularia (white-spotted longhorn beetle) in orchards and forests, the TTDARES has developed an effective technique in which an air blow gun is used to blast the burrows in the trees where the larvae are eating to eliminate them. To promote this and water conservation techniques among growers, the TTDARES held the Anoplophora macularia Control Demonstration and Water-conservation Technique Promotion Event, which was attended by 80 farmers and other guests. The farmers stated that this new technique is great because there used to be virtually no way to combat the beetles. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that with these pests, prevention is far more feasible than trying to treat an existing problem, so the best way is to eliminate adults and prevent females from laying their eggs. If the eggs have already been laid, however, the alternative is to kill the larvae to try to reduce the damage. The air blow gun is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, efficient, and eco-friendly. It may be used for both agriculture and forest conservation, reducing pesticide use and thus pollution.
