Organic Citrus Fruit Cultivation Management Techniques Lecture Held on September 21, 2016 at Banchiu Branch Station Orchard

2017-03-07

In promoting organic agriculture, the TTDARES held the “Organic Citrus Fruit Cultivation Management Techniques Lecture” on September 21, 2016 at the TTDARES Banchiu Branch Station orchard to teach growers key related techniques. About 40 growers from all over Taitung County attended. TTDARES Deputy-Director Chen Yu-chu stated that the key, foundational aspect to the successful cultivation of organic fruit trees lies in the structure of the growing environment, that is, balance and stability in the orchard’s ecosystem. Another important concept is how to allow trees to successfully make the organic transition; one crucial aspect is in boosting the autoimmunity of the trees so that they may fight pests, disease, and other forms of environmental adversity on their own. Another key aspect is precision in organic fertilization and the appropriate supplementation of plant nutrition. These techniques will help an orchard make a successful transition to organic growing. Though most farmers believe growing citrus trees organically is extremely difficult and very few are willing to do so, the TTDARES hopes that the techniques it has developed and shared during the lecture will allow growers to become further acquainted with organic cultivation concepts and increase their willingness to go organic.
