The effect of different pollination tool in artificial pollination efficiency of custard apple (Annona squamosa x A. cherimola hybrids)

2016-01-27

Custard apple needs artificial pollination due to flowering time and the lack of insect pollination. Pollen collected and artificial pollination wastes time. This study used different pollination tool to evaluate the effect to the fruit-set and fruit quality of ‘Gefner’ custard apple. The pollination tool is including camel hair brush, puffer, plastic pollination gun, and plastic pollination pen. The results show that custard apple flower used plastic pollination pen and gum had faster pollinated speed, each flower need 9.2 seconds and 9.7 seconds, respectively. The puffer was slowly, which 11.9 seconds each flower. The plastic pollination gun had the most cost-effective, average 175.2 flowers /g pollen with anther, and the puffer is 102.0 flowers/ g pollen with anther. The percentage of custard apple fruit-set used pollination tool were all more 82%.

The flower of ‘Gefner’ custard apple used difference pollinated tools. (A) Camel hair brush, (B)Puffer, (C)Plastic pollination gun, and (D) Plastic pollination pen. Mean comparison on pollination characteristics of ‘Gefner’ custard apple used difference pollinated tools.
