Timing Is Key in Harvesting Djulis! TTDARES Holds “Djulis Postharvest Handling Demonstration Event”

2022-04-22

To enhance growers’ postharvest handling skills for djulis, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) held the Djulis Postharvest Handling Demonstration Event on March 24, 2022, in Daren Township. TTDARES Deputy Director Lu Po-song stated that djulis is an important grain crop in Taitung mainly grown in Taitung City and the townships of Taimali, Jinfeng, Dawu, and Daren. The grain is highly adaptive, which means it has few environmental demands and is most frequently grown via eco-friendly and organic methods. Growers are already very familiar with cultivation and production, but postharvest processing must be conducted properly to ensure good quality. At the event, speakers talked about how to determine the optimal time to harvest and then how to process the djulis. Also, a demonstration on the use of a thresher was given. Attendees enthusiastically participated, gave numerous suggestions, exchanged ideas, and learned together to gain a clearer understanding of djulis postharvest processing.

TTDARES Deputy Director Lu Po-song welcomes attendees and describes the purpose of the event. Assistant researcher Huang Zi-yun talks about how to determine the optimal time to harvest djulis. Associate researcher Huang Zheng-long demonstrates the use of a thresher for djulis. Attendees enthusiastically participated and exchanged ideas.
