The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Safe Pesticide Use on Sugar Apples and Smart Fertilization Lecture on August 29 and September 5 at the Jianhe Sugar Apple Collection Center and the Taitung Farmers’ Association Promotion Department in an effort to provide guidance to farmers in the Taitung City and Beinan areas regarding the production of safe, high-quality sugar apples and atemoyas. The event was hosted by TTDARES Deputy Director Chen Yu-chu, and 100 growers attended. Topics discussed were sugar apple cultivation management techniques, smart fertilization, the use of biofertilizers, and pest/disease prevention techniques. Attendees were also given a chart compiled by the TTDARES on pest/disease prevention. Growers were reminded to use proper management techniques for safe pesticide use so that all may work together toward making the entire industry one of safe production. Attendees were also reminded to pay close attention to fruit sets to prevent trees from becoming overloaded, overheated, or too cold, which could cause fruit to fall and thus decrease yield. After attending the session, growers will be better able to maintain the fruit’s high quality and reputation.
