To provide more in-depth food and agriculture education, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture held classes on roselles at Chulai and Xinwu Elementary Schools in Haiduan on March 17, 2026. The classes were taught by Lü Chüan-hsin, a farmer and expert in food and agriculture education, and attended by a total of 60 students and teachers. Participants learned to distinguish this local plant with their five senses and gained a better understanding of the agriculture industry and diet.
Participants learned about the appearance of roselles at different stages by observing their seeds, seedlings, and dried flowers. Then, they got to try some roselle preserves and drinks, making a connection to their daily lives with their taste buds. After that, they went outside to loosen soil, plant seeds, and water them, putting into practice what they had learned in the classroom.
Class content included the themes of “agricultural production and safety” (part of the dimension of “agriculture and environment”), dietary intake and lifestyle” (part of the dimension of “dietary health and consumption”), and diet culture (part of the dimension of “dietary lifestyle and culture”), all of which are from the “Three Dimensions and Six Themes of Food and Agriculture Education.” This connection between the field and the table helped participants more deeply understand agricultural production and sustainability concepts, which are core values in food and agriculture education.
