The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture held a class about millet on March 15, 2026, at Zhiben Junior High School. Farmer Lin Chien-chung taught the class, which was attended by 18 teachers and students, about the environment in which millet grows, sowing methods, and basic cultivation knowledge. In addition, since millet is a favorite of birds, growers must be vigilant about keeping them away. A traditional device used by Indigenous people to scare birds away is a noise-maker constructed of bamboo. Meanwhile, the TTDARES has developed a scarecrow that moves on its own with the aid of solar power, and alongside the use of a TTDARES-designed net, farmers can ensure absolutely no bird damage will be incurred, in turn reducing farmers’ losses. During the hands-on part of the class, Lin led the students in threshing millet spikes, explained the complex process of bringing millet from the field to the table, and allowed them to plant their own millet seeds at the school. The students said they enjoyed this first experience of threshing and planting millet and that they came to better understand how important it is to cherish food. The TTDARES will continue to promote food and agriculture education at schools so as to keep the culture of farming alive and reinforce the importance of protecting the environment.
