To promote food and agriculture education, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture held a class about roselles on March 12, 2026, at Fengli Elementary School. Wu Mei-hua, a farmer and expert in food and agriculture education, taught the class, which was attended by 26 teachers and students. Wu explained the Chinese name for the plant, “luoshenkui,” is a transliteration of its English name, “roselle,” and discussed the technique of pinching to promote branching and greater yields. Besides learning, the students were also able to try roselle-infused cookies, making a connection to what they had learned through their taste buds. During a discussion after the class, the students mentioned that they frequently see roselles and enjoy preserved roselles but knew little about growing them. But Wu led them in planting seedlings at their school, and coupled with her instruction, they developed a greater sense of connection with farming and the land, making the class quite a precious experience. The TTDARES will continue to promote food and agriculture education experiences like this in an effort to help the concepts of respect for the land and sustainable development take root.
