Side-deep Fertilization and Carbon-emission Reduction Help the Environment While Boosting Production TTDARES Holds “Application of Slow-release Side-deep Fertilizers in Rice Fields Demonstration Event

2024-09-27
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the use of chemical fertilizers, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture held the Application of Slow-release Side-deep Fertilizers in Rice Fields Demonstration Event on September 27, 2024, at the demonstration field of grower Huang Shih-ming, hosted by TTDARES Deputy Director Lu Po-song. During the event, side-deep fertilization techniques with slow-release fertilizers were shown to growers. In the demonstration field, 63.7 kilograms of three major fertilizer elements (nitrogen, phosphorus pentoxide, and potassium oxide) were reduced per hectare, and there were 2.4 fewer kilograms of nitrous oxide emissions than in the control field, which corresponds to 636 fewer kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions per hectare. In addition, rice yield brought about a profit increase of NT$5,940 per hectare.
