To add another fun activity to rural seniors’ lives, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture worked with the local Farmers’ Association this year in implementing the Agricultural Integrated Consulting and Advisory System Program. On July 11 and 18 at the Chenggong Farmers’ Association, the Mounted Fern DIY Class (part of the Green Care series) was held. 50 people attended and learned about how to care for ferns. The event will also serve as a reference for the planning of future Green Care classes.Since ferns grow with relatively few stringent environmental needs because they are highly adaptable, as long as the soil is kept moist and they are well-shaded, they grow strong, making them perfect as a fun horticultural activity for seniors. In the class, participants not only learned how to care for ferns but also were able to exercise their creativity, boosting their sense of participation and confidence. And of course, doing things with your hands and working with greenery are physically and psychologically therapeutic. The class included the sections “Understanding Mounted Ferns and Their Applications” and “Care for Mounted Ferns—Skills and DIY.” The instructors discussed the growth habits and environmental needs of ferns, and participants made mounted projects of various forms, exhibiting their unique creativity. Participants said the class provided them with professional horticultural knowledge and that they look forward to using what they have learned to share the fun with their families and friends, adding another pleasant activity to life in rural Taitung.
