To promote millet cultivation and the preservation of the millet culture, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Ministry of Agriculture held the Millet Seed Conservation Achievement Conference on April 19, 2024 at the Indigenous community of Taromak, at which different varieties of millet spikes were exhibited. Also, the features of the millet germplasm, along with millet cultivation management and seed conservation techniques, were discussed, and germplasm resources were given back to the community. 44 varieties were on display from seven Indigenous communities. These varieties were first collected by US scholars in 1977, and in 2010, National Taiwan University Professor Warren Kuo brought them back to Taiwan from the US, increasing the quantity through cultivation by the TTDARES and finally bringing seeds back to the Indigenous communities. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen and Eastern Region Branch of the Agriculture and Food Agency Deputy Director Chen Chi-tsun gave germplasm resources of three millet varieties originally from Taromak back to community leader Danaro Lavalius. Then, TTDARES assistant researcher Chang Fang-kuei introduced the features of the millet germplasm and talked about cultivation management and seed preservation techniques. All in all, the event promoted more attention and support for the preservation of Indigenous culture and agricultural development.
