Indigenous People’s Special Crop Industry Taking Deeper Root: TTDARES Names New Gac Variety “Gac Taitung No.1”

The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan has long been involved in boosting Taitung’s indigenous people’s special crop industry, working to increase the number of varieties of these crops and develop a diversity of uses. As a result, the TTDARES held a meeting for the naming of a new variety of gac on June 23 at the main TTDARES office in downtown Taitung City. After a review of related documents and an on-site evaluation, the committee unanimously decided on the name “Gac Taitung No. 1,” making it the first native gac variety to be named in Taiwan. The variety ripens in summer after only 59 days, which is up to two-thirds less time than required by other Southeast Asian varieties. In addition, each hectare of these orchards produces up to 43.8 metric tons of fruit, nearly double the figure of other strains commonly grown. This significant boost to yield per hectare will greatly lower the costs of canopies and other such materials related to gac cultivation while increasing efficiency for such tasks as pollination and protective bagging.

 

The TTDARES evaluation committee unanimously decided on the name of the new gac variety on June 23. Evaluation committee members assess samples of Gac Taitung No. 1 on site. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-Yen introduces the many uses of gac.

Gac Taitung No. 1 has a regular shape and a bright orange-red color.
