Keeping the Environment Clean by Not Burning Rice Straw TTDARES Holds “Demonstration on Use of a Rice Straw Decomposer”

2019-07-23

The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Demonstration on Use of a Rice Straw Decomposer on July 17 at a rice field in Guanshan. Hosted by TTDARES director Chen Hsin-yen, the event demonstrated to growers how to use an organic rice straw decomposer. Such method of dealing with post-harvest rice straw not only prevents air pollution that results from the traditional method of burning but also boosts the organic qualities and nutrient content of the soil, which means less fertilization is required the next season. As a result, farming costs will be lowered and the environment will be better.

A number of growers attended the event. A comparison of areas where the rice straw decomposer was used (right) and was not used (left). The straw on the right has decomposed well and has already become the same color as the soil, whereas the straw on the left has not decomposed well.
