The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Safe Pesticide Use on Sugar Apples and Smart Fertilization Lecture on August 9 at the Donghe Farmers’ Association in an effort to provide guidance regarding the production of safe, high-quality atemoyas to farmers whose crops are to be exported. The event was hosted by TTDARES Deputy Director Chen Yu-chu, and about 95 growers attended. Topics discussed were smart fertilization, the use of biofertilizers, and pest/disease prevention techniques. Attendees were also given a chart compiled by the TTDARES on pest/disease prevention. Growers were reminded to use proper management techniques for safe pesticide use so that all may work together toward making the entire industry one of safe production. Growers were also reminded to pay close attention to fruit sets to prevent trees from becoming overloaded, overheated, or too cold, which could cause fruit to fall and thus decrease yield. Finally, they were told not to harvest atemoyas too early so as to maintain the fruit’s high quality and reputation.
