Anoplophora macularia (white-spotted longhorn beetle) is a major fruit tree (especially citrus trees) and forest pest in Taiwan. Damage in the early stage is difficult to detect, and control is quite challenging. They can go as far as to cause an entire tree to wither and die, inflicting severe losses to the agricultural and forest industries. In controlling these pests, prevention is far more feasible than trying to treat an existing problem. The best form of prevention is to keep the females from laying eggs in the tree trunks. But if the pests have already begun to cause damage, the larvae must be found and killed as soon as possible to reduce the degree of the damage. In response, the TTDARES has developed a highly effective technique in which an air blow gun is used to blast the burrows in the trees where the larvae are eating to either push them out or kill them from the force of the pressure. The gun is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, efficient, and eco-friendly. It may be used for both agriculture and forest conservation, reducing pesticide use and thus pollution.
