In light of the massive destruction wreaked on sugar apple trees during last year’s typhoons, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Sugar Apple Orchard Windbreak Demonstration Event in the Taimali Township orchard of grower Zhan Qian-hong so as to remind growers to start taking preventative measures now. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that the purpose of the event was to remind growers to make sure of their current wind protection capacity before the oncoming typhoon season. Furthermore, growers must also be continue to be alert with the recent heavy plum rains and foehn winds. At the event, growers were instructed on windbreak strategies, disease management techniques related to continual rainfall, the use of Philippine ebony (Diospyros egbert-walkeri Kosterm, a tree that works well as a natural windbreak), as well as how to decrease damage that can result from typhoons, foehn winds, and heavy rain. Taking such measures will decrease growers’ losses.
