In an effort to encourage safe, high-quality sugar apple production, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the 2015 Outstanding Sugar Apple Orchard Contest from December 14 to 18. 50 growers registered for the event, and after two stages of evaluation that assessed fruit quality and orchard quality, the winners have been announced! Hong Wen-xian once again won first place, followed by two young growers, Li Jun-yi and Chen Zhi-wei, tying for second. Third place was won by Wang Zhong-li, Li Quan-zhang, and Sulin Baoxi. Furthermore, four growers received merit awards, and five others received honorable mention awards. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that the evaluation did not only take exterior appearance of the fruit into consideration, but healthy management in the production process and ecological friendliness of orchards. The TTDARES plans to hold a demonstration event on managing high-quality orchards in the future so as to continue raising the quality of sugar apple production and further the industry’s development.
