March 5, 2021, Banchiu Branch Station Early-maturing Loquat Orchard Demonstration Event

2021-08-23

Taitung was the first place in Taiwan to produce loquats as an agricultural industry item. To boost harvests for early-maturing crops and further improve the loquat industry, the TTDARES held the Early-maturing Loquat Orchard Demonstration Event at the orchard of a farmer named Liao Kun-lang in Beinan Township, which was attended by 42 farmers and other attendees. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that with the influences of Taitung’s geographical position, the local topography, and the Japan current, the winters are relatively warm, which helps loquat fruits develop and become ready for harvest earlier than in other regions. 20 years ago, the TTDARES became involved in the experimental cultivation and research of early-maturing loquats, which led to the discovery that ‘Nagasaki-wase’ loquats not only have a high flowering rate and mature early but also adapt well to the environment in Taitung. TTDARES assistant researcher Chen Hsiao-chun spoke about the features of this variety, and Liao shared about his experiences growing the crop. After that, everyone went to see the orchard to see in person the differences during the growth period between the variety and others. The TTDARES hopes the event will boost the local early-maturing loquat industry, in turn driving advancement for the entire loquat industry.
