TIPS TO CURB BIRD DEMAGE IN FOXTAIL MILLET

2020-08-06

In order to encourage more farmers in Taitung to grow organic millet, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Lecture on Bird Damage Prevention for Organic Millet Farming on the morning of May 20, 2020 in Anshuo Village, Daren Township. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that the TTDARES has spent a lot of time experimenting with bird damage prevention in recent years to find eco-friendly ways to reduce agricultural losses from birds and increase the amount of land devoted to growing organic millet. In addition to having invented a solar-powered bird-repeller that is effective for large areas, the TTDARES has also conducted experiments on mesh covers for small fields. These covers, which are set up just before heading, keep birds away from crops so well that bird-related losses have been reduced to zero. The covers may be used repeatedly and are much more time- and energy-efficient than commonly used manual bird control methods. Thanks to the TTDARES, growers have new options to choose from based on the terrain of their fields, labor, and costs to reduce losses and thus boost profits.

TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen welcomes attendees. Assistant researcher Huang Li-zhong explains key points on bird damage prevention for millet. Growers watch bird damage prevention mesh covers being set up.
