TIPS TO DJULIS HARVEST AND POST-HARVEST PROCESSING

2020-08-07

To improve postharvest handling of djulis, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held the Djulis Postharvest Handling Demonstration Event on March 19, 2020 at the indigenous village of Tjukuvulj in Dawu Township. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that djulis is an important grain crop for Taitung, which is why, in recent years, governmental agricultural agencies have provided guidance on the development of the industry and promoted the Taiwan Good Agriculture Practice (TGAP) program, bringing Taiwan’s primary production to an advanced level of development. However, since many djulis growers are not proficient at postharvest handling, product quality is affected, lowering people’s willingness to buy it and thus pushing prices down. In order to help growers gain a better understanding of the best time to harvest, improve their postharvest handling, and boost husking efficiency, the TTDARES held this demonstration event, which included a series of explanations and hands-on demonstrations. Aside from talking about the best time to harvest and boosting post-harvest handling, a husking demonstration was conducted, allowing attendees to become more informed on making this crop more profitable.

Director Chen Hsin-yen begins the event and explains its aims. Assistant researcher Huang Zi-yun discusses proper harvest timing and postharvest handling. Associate researcher Huang Zheng-long demonstrates djulis husking.

Attendees listening to explanations at the event.
