Plum Tree Pruning Lecture and Demonstration Event” Held at Banchiu Branch Station on November 20, 2019

2020-02-17

So as to improve plum orchard management and cultivation in Taitung to achieve precision in operations, make work more efficient, and allow for stable output and quality, the TTDARES held the Plum Tree Pruning Lecture and Demonstration Event to share and demonstrate in detail about correct pruning and management during the dormant period (fall/winter) with farmers. TTDARES Director Chen Hsin-yen stated that ripe and unripe plums alike are usually processed, and the many types of plum products sold on the market are viewed as high-quality health products. Most of Taiwan’s plum trees are in Kaohsiung, Nantou, Taitung, and Tainan. 626.6 hectares of land are used for growing plums in Taitung, accounting for 16.5% of the total in Taiwan and making it the third-largest region of plum production. However, many plum orchards have been abandoned or are not properly managed due to the aging population in farming villages, lack of laborers, and production/sales factors, all of which have caused output and quality to greatly diminish, in turn leading to an imbalance in supply and demand in recent years. In response, the event was held with an eye to stabilizing production capacity and product value.

Assistant researcher Chen Yi-jun talks about pruning during the dormant period (fall/winter). Attendees learn hands-on by pruning trees at the event.
