In order to boost the quality and competitiveness of locally grown pitayas, the TTDARES held its Seminar on Boosting Pitaya Quality to share about important techniques related to output and the harvest season with farmers. About 70 farmers from all over Taitung County came, enjoying the event and learning much from it. TTDARES Deputy Director Chen Yu-chu stated that the amount of farmland devoted to growing pitayas has increased significantly and rapidly in recent years, reaching about 3,000 hectares in 2018. June to October is the peak of output. The pitayas grown in Taiwan are mainly eaten fresh as they are; there is little being done in terms of exports and processing. With such a large amount of fresh pitayas being restricted to the local market, saturation and low prices are common, especially for fruits of low quality. The amount of land devoted to pitayas in Taitung is less than 200 hectares (about 5.7% of Taiwan’s total), yet the TTDARES still encourages farmers not to pursue high yields so as to control overall output, instead emphasizing quality so as to enhance market competitiveness.
