“Sugar Apple Pollen Preservation Lecture” Held at Banchiu Branch Station on June 28, 2018

2019-02-01

Sugar apple pollen is short-lived, so once it is mature, it should immediately be used for hand-pollination. However, the difficult weather that is characteristic of the pollination season frequently causes growers to be unable to pollinate right away, in turn causing the pollen to become over-mature and damaged before it can be used. So as to reduce farmers’ costs associated with damaged pollen, the TTDARES held the Sugar Apple Pollen Preservation Lecture at the Banchiu Branch Station on June 28, 2018. Assistant researcher Chen Hsiao Chun talked about sugar apple pollen vigor traits, flower gathering methods, what to know about handling the flowers after they have been gathered, and low-temperature preservation. Growers were then brought to an orchard to see the differences in fruit growth for trees pollinated with pollen that had been stored for different time periods. Growers at the event were very attentive and asked numerous questions, which were answered in detail by Chen. The aim of the lecture was to allow growers to gain a better understanding of sugar apple pollen vigor and make practical use of pollen preservation methods.
