Mechanized Sowing, Cultivation and Harvesting of Flint Corn Demonstration

2014-06-03

The average age of growers in Taitung is gradually increasing, and with more young people leaving the area, a complete technology for mechanized growing is needed to lessen labor and production costs. In response, we held the Mechanized Sowing, Cultivation and Harvesting of Flint Corn Demonstration events in Donghe Township, the town of Chenggong, Luye Township and Changbin Township. Our main objectives were to encourage growers to let fields lie fallow for two consecutive seasons, yet planting flint corn for one of those seasons. The Taitung County Farmers Association Feed Mill signed a contract with growers as a guarantee to buy their yields. We introduced mechanized growing technology to growers while at the same time bringing new life to the fields of Taitung by allowing them to lie fallow for two seasons. In addition, the utilization of farmland was increased and growers had the opportunity to earn more money.
