Breeding Rice for Resistance to Bacterial Blight Disease

2022-06-29

Bacterial blight disease (BB) is caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. It causes wilting, yellowing, and drying of leaves therefore has negative effect to rice grain yield and quality. However, most of varieties in Taiwan are not resistant to BB, so it is necessary to developing a variety with BB resistance. Thus, we introgressed and evaluted the BB resistance variety from Internation Rice Research Institute, using marker-assisted selection to pyramid resistance genes into an elite cultivar, Taitung 33, to breed a variety with advantages of both BB resistance and grain quality. Three lines, Tungkenyu 1081311, 1081334, and 1081336, were seleted for carrying four BB resistance genes (Xa4, xa5, xa13, and Xa21) and were found with 79.8%, 85.6%, and 76.9% of Taitung 33 background through genotyping analysis.
