To boost the knowledge and skills of local farmers and those who are looking to be farmers in the future, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) established the Taitung Training Center of the Farmers’ Academy in 2011, where a variety of classes are offered, including Basic Agriculture, Basic Horticulture, Basic Healthy Plant Cultivation and Use, Advanced Sugar Apple Cultivation Techniques, and Basic Organic Agriculture Operational Management. By the end of 2020, 92 classes had been held, serving a total of 1,627 trainees (including repeats). The classes allow trainees to accumulate knowledge for a solid foundation for their futures as farmers. In addition, to meet needs in indigenous villages of Taitung, the TTDARES has held Mobile Agricultural Classes since 2014, in which researchers visit the villages to provide instruction on new concepts and techniques on site so that farmers there need not spend time traveling the long distance to the training center. By the end of 2020, 24 such classes had been held, serving a total of 1,094 farmers in indigenous villages (including repeats).
