2020-08-07

The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agricultural, Executive Yuan has long been involved in boosting Taitung’s indigenous people’s special crop industry, working to increase the number of varieties of these crops and develop a diversity of uses. As a result, the TTDARES held a meeting for the naming of a new variety of spiny bitter gourd (Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng.) on June 23 at the main TTADRES office in downtown Taitung City. After a review of related documents and an on-site evaluation, the committee unanimously decided on the name “Spiny bitter gourd Taitung No. 1” making it the first native spiny bitter gourd variety to be named in Taiwan. The variety ripens in summer only 59 days after pollination, which is up to two-thirds less time than required by other Southeast Asian varieties. In addition, each hectare of these orchards produces up to 43.8 metric tons of fruit, nearly double the figure of other strains commonly grown. This significant boots to yield per hectare will greatly lower the costs of canopies and other such materials relate to spiny bitter gourd cultivation while increasing efficiency for such tasks as pollination and protective bagging.

The TTDARES evaluation committee unanimously decided on the name of the new spiny bitter gourd variety on June 23. Evaluation committee members assessed samples of spiny bitter gourd Taitung No. 1 on-site. Spiny bitter gourd Taitung No. 1 has a regular shape and a bright orange-red color.

TTDARES Director Chen, Hsin-Yen introduced the many uses of spiny bitter gourd.
