So as to promote development for Taitung’s indigenous farmer vegetable industry, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan held a review and naming conference for a new winged bean variety at the TTDARES grounds on May 2. After a review of related documents and the bean itself by council members, they decided unanimously to name it “winged bean Taitung no.1.” The new variety has a consistent pod size, the pod being tender, jade green, without spots, of a desirable shape, and fresh and crispy when eaten. It can be grown in both spring and autumn. Each hectare of land can annually produce about 11.5 tons, which is a 44% higher yield than other varieties. This will be helpful in driving both the winged bean industry and the indigenous farmer vegetable industry.
