Wind and Sunburn Control for Pitaya

2016-07-19

Strong wind from typhoons and the blazing sun of summer frequently cause pitaya damage, but the TTDARES has developed equipment to counter these problems. With common hedgerow supports as the base, pipes are placed at angles to form a string of X’s along the two sides of the hedgerow so that each side has a slanted plane. A hexagonal plastic mesh with large holes is attached to these planes to hold the pitaya branches in place during strong winds. Furthermore, a 65% shade net is suspended at the top of the X’s to reduce the amount of direct sunlight hitting the plants, in turn decreasing sunburn damage. This easy technique works for pitaya grown on a hedgerow, and it has no effects on plant growth or management. For a newly established orchard, the hedgerow supports may be built directly in this way for this purpose. Growers can make adjustments to the equipment to suit their specific needs.
