Protecting Navel Oranges with Mesh Tree Covers

2016-07-19

The mesh tree covers developed by the TTDARES for monkey control during the 2-3 months before harvest do not produce any significant effects on canopy temperature or relative humidity. Thus, while not affecting growth, the following benefits are enjoyed: prevents damage from wild animals (Taiwan macaques, wild boars, rodents, etc.), prevents insect damage (oriental fruit fly), decreases occurrence of disease (citrus canker), decreases damage to leaves and fruit that normally results from scraping/bumping during strong winds, and enhances fruit quality. Furthermore, the covers are easy to use, produce a high ratio of return on investment, and pose no harm to wild animals. This method is sure to produce the best results.

A comparison between the customary use of white covers (top) and the new mesh tree cover (bottom). Fruit protected by the mesh tree cover (top)is of better quality than fruit protected by customary white covers (bottom).
