Breeding and Uses of Dianthus Taitung No. 1 (Fragrance Cloud)

2016-01-20

Dianthus Taitung No. 1 (Fragrance Cloud) is the first Dianthus in Taiwan to have obtained plant variety rights (October, 2012). In breeding this variety, the commercial variety Dianthus chinensis (Super Parfait Strawberry) was the female parent, and the D. superbus var. longicalycinus was the male parent. After hybridization, selection of offspring, and interbreeding, Taitung No. 1 was finally obtained. It grows to about 20 cm tall, and the diameter of the flower reaches 5 cm with large petals that make it great as an ornamental. When planted in fields or 4-inch pots, beautiful flower beds can be created. While flowering, they emit the fragrance inherited from the male parent, and such aroma is especially strong on sunny days. They can bloom year-round, even during the hot, long-daylight summer days, which is a feature unique to this Taiwanese Dianthus variety. It is also becoming a top choice in the international market for heat-tolerant ornamentals.
