Abstract

The TTDARES has worked with Dawang Elementary School in Taimali Township, focusing on the locally grown daylily Taitung No. 7, in bringing together 4-H club members, homemakers, and farmworkers in planning out content and completing a course model for food and agriculture education instruction in Taitung. Similar courses were designed for students at Luye Junior High School (in the East Rift Valley) and Zhongxiao Elementary School (in the coastal town of Chenggong), for which the local special crops of herbs and gac, respectively, were chosen. Local members of the regional Farmers’ Association, farmers, women from farming villages, and industrialists came together to design the course and explore the results of its implementation. This study analyzed and compared the performance of the elementary and junior high school students in the three major indexes of knowledge, attitude, and behavior before and after the course to gain an understanding of how the courses influenced the students. The results showed significant differences in the elementary school students in the indexes of knowledge and behavior, and in the junior high school students in the indexes of knowledge and attitude. In general, after taking the courses, there were positive changes in students from both schools in all three indexes, making the effectiveness of the courses evident. The results may serve as a reference for courses to be held at other schools in the future.
