As part of the government’s policy on implementing food and agriculture education, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) held the Food and Agriculture Education Class for 23 students and teachers at Taitung County’s Fushan Elementary School on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.Fushan Elementary is an international experimental school. The class was taught with the help of the school’s English teacher, teaching the students about insects in a fun way through a storybook so as to reduce their fears of insects. Liao Jia-zhu, one of the winners of the 3rd Top Hundred Young Farmers contest, spoke on disease and pest control for vegetables while incorporating English in talking about growing bok choy. Liao also showed the students how to make a simple, safe sunflower oil-based insect repellant, which keeps pests off bok choy as it is growing, letting students know that everyday items at home can be used to easily make organic pest-control materials. The class also taught the teachers at the school more about crops, which will help them further promote knowledge related to food and agriculture education.
